For TPU, the feeder design matters as much as the nozzle and temperature. A short, supported path with direct drive usually gives more consistent extrusion; Bowden systems can work only with a well-tuned, low-friction setup.
Why direct drive helps
- Short unsupported filament length
- Less buckling
- Faster retraction response
- Better control of soft material
Where Bowden can work
A Bowden system reduces moving mass and can print TPU with a short, smooth tube, low speed and minimal retraction. It is less tolerant of poor tube quality, tight bends and high flow.
Match the feeder to the part
- Small detailed parts
- Large soft parts
- Long print time
- Multi-material or dual extrusion
Test the actual geometry
Print a thin wall, a tall flexible section and a part with holes. Check extrusion consistency, surface finish and layer adhesion. A cube alone does not reveal buckling or pressure lag.
| Feeder | TPU behaviour | Advantage | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct drive | Stable extrusion | Low buckling | More moving mass |
| Short Bowden | Usable | Higher speed | Tube friction |
| Long Bowden | Difficult | Light toolhead | Pressure lag |
| Dual drive | Very stable | Soft and hard materials | Cost and setup |
Common engineering mistakes
- Using a long Bowden path.
- High retraction settings.
- Ignoring tube quality.
- Printing too fast.
- Testing only a cube.
Checklist
- Is the path short and smooth?
- Is retraction low?
- Is the idler tension correct?
- Is the speed suitable?
- Was the real part tested?
