Flexible prints can be both elastic and strong when rigidity and flexibility are separated by geometry. Use a stiff support structure with compliant contact zones instead of making the whole part soft.

Design approach

  • Stiff load path.
  • Compliant zones.
  • Progressive thickness.
  • Rounded transitions.

Material

TPU supports elastic contact; PETG, PA or rigid inserts carry load. Avoid thin unsupported walls.

Validate

  • Static load.
  • Cycles.
  • Permanent set.

Common engineering mistakes

  • Only changing hardness.
  • Making everything soft.
  • Sharp transitions.
  • Static test only.
  • Ignoring mounting.

Buyer checklist

  • Where is the load?
  • How much deflection?
  • Is a stiff frame needed?
  • Are transitions smooth?
  • Was cycling tested?
