Fan settings depend on material, part size, bridge length and layer time. PLA usually tolerates more cooling; ABS, ASA and PC need less. Tune by zone rather than using one global value.
Material direction
- PLA: high cooling.
- PETG: moderate cooling.
- ABS/ASA/PC: low cooling.
- TPU: geometry dependent.
Part control
Small features and bridges may need more air; large solid areas need less to preserve layer bonding. If the slicer supports it, set separate bridge and overhang fan values.
Validate
- Bridges.
- Layer adhesion.
- Warping.
- Surface.
| Material | Cooling | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | High | Heat creep |
| PETG | Medium | Weak layers |
| ABS/ASA | Low | Warping |
| PC | Minimum | Delamination |
Common engineering mistakes
- One profile for all materials.
- Maximum fan everywhere.
- Ignoring part size.
- Testing only one shape.
- Changing temperature and fan together.
Buyer checklist
- Which material?
- What geometry?
- Where are bridges?
- Is layer adhesion sufficient?
- Is warping visible?
