Elephant foot comes from excessive first-layer squish, high bed temperature or excess flow. The correction depends on whether the part needs adhesion, dimensional accuracy or easy release.
Measure the bottom
- Compare width at bottom and above.
- Check first-layer thickness.
- Inspect chamfer or fillet.
Adjust one variable
Correct Z offset first, then flow and bed temperature. A small chamfer can protect the base when adhesion must remain strong.
Validate
- Measure after cooling.
- Check adhesion.
- Repeat on the same geometry.
| Cause | Signal | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Z offset | Very flat lines | Raise offset |
| Bed heat | Soft bulge | Lower temperature |
| Flow | Wide base | Calibrate |
| Geometry | Sharp bottom | Add chamfer |
Common engineering mistakes
- Changing many settings together.
- Measuring hot.
- Ignoring adhesion.
- Using a huge chamfer.
- Judging one side.
Buyer checklist
- Is the bottom measured?
- Is the first layer too flat?
- Is bed temperature suitable?
- Is flow calibrated?
- Was the fix repeated?
