Direct drive and Bowden systems can both print TPU, but they fail differently. Direct drive shortens the unsupported path and improves control; Bowden can work with a short, low-friction tube and conservative settings.
Direct drive advantages
- Short filament path
- Less buckling
- Faster retraction response
- Stable pressure control
Bowden limits and workarounds
A long Bowden tube increases friction and pressure lag. Use a short, smooth tube, low speed, minimal retraction and moderate idler pressure. Flexible filament amplifies every restriction in the path.
Compare on the real part
- Thin walls
- Long flexible sections
- Holes and gaps
- Multi-hour prints
Measure the result
Compare extrusion consistency, surface, layer adhesion and failure rate. A cube alone does not show buckling or pressure lag.
| System | TPU behaviour | Advantage | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct drive | Stable | Low buckling | Moving mass |
| Short Bowden | Usable | Lighter toolhead | Tube friction |
| Long Bowden | Difficult | Low mass | Pressure lag |
| Dual drive | Very stable | Soft and hard materials | Cost |
Common engineering mistakes
- Using a long Bowden path.
- High retraction.
- Ignoring tube quality.
- Printing too fast.
- Testing only a cube.
Checklist
- Is the path short and smooth?
- Is retraction low?
- Is idler tension moderate?
- Is the speed suitable?
