Filament can break during printing because of moisture, brittleness, excessive tension, sharp bends, old material or a poor spool winding. Identify where the break occurs before changing temperature.

Locate the break

  • On the spool.
  • Between spool and feeder.
  • Inside the extruder.
  • After the nozzle.

Check material and path

Dry and inspect the filament, reduce bends and tension, and verify diameter. Old or heat-exposed PLA can become brittle even when dry.

Confirm the fix

  • Run a long extrusion.
  • Print a tall part.
  • Check spool rotation.

Common engineering mistakes

  • Pulling hard on brittle filament.
  • Ignoring storage heat.
  • Increasing feeder tension.
  • Changing multiple settings.
  • Not testing a long run.

Buyer checklist

  • Where does it break?
  • Is material dry and flexible?
  • Is the path smooth?
  • Is tension correct?
  • Does a long print succeed?
