Filament can break during printing because of moisture, brittleness, excessive tension, sharp bends, old material or a poor spool winding. Identify where the break occurs before changing temperature.
Locate the break
- On the spool.
- Between spool and feeder.
- Inside the extruder.
- After the nozzle.
Check material and path
Dry and inspect the filament, reduce bends and tension, and verify diameter. Old or heat-exposed PLA can become brittle even when dry.
Confirm the fix
- Run a long extrusion.
- Print a tall part.
- Check spool rotation.
| Location | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Spool | Winding/tension | Rewind or replace |
| Path | Sharp bend | Straighten |
| Feeder | Grip pressure | Adjust |
| Nozzle | Heat/clog | Inspect |
Common engineering mistakes
- Pulling hard on brittle filament.
- Ignoring storage heat.
- Increasing feeder tension.
- Changing multiple settings.
- Not testing a long run.
Buyer checklist
- Where does it break?
- Is material dry and flexible?
- Is the path smooth?
- Is tension correct?
- Does a long print succeed?
