Custom jigs and fixtures need stiffness, repeatable locating surfaces and wear control. Printing them can shorten development time, but the material must match the load, temperature and contact cycles.

Define the fixture function

  • Locating and clamping method.
  • Load and temperature.
  • Number of cycles.
  • Chemical or abrasion contact.

Design for repeatability

Use replaceable contact pads, generous walls, ribbing and clear datum surfaces. Avoid thin structures that deflect under clamping.

Validate with the real part

  • Check fit and movement.
  • Measure wear after cycles.
  • Record material and orientation.

Common engineering mistakes

  • Using decorative material for tooling.
  • Ignoring wear.
  • Thin walls under load.
  • No locating reference.
  • Testing without the real workpiece.

Buyer checklist

  • What is the load?
  • How many cycles?
  • What temperature applies?
  • Is wear expected?
  • Is the fixture repeatable?
