Wood-filled filament prints like a composite and finishes like a wood-like surface. Painting and coating require controlled sanding, moisture removal, primer selection and thin layers; otherwise the surface swells, cracks or loses detail.
Prepare the printed surface
- Remove supports and strings
- Sand progressively
- Remove dust with a dry brush
- Dry the part after washing
Control moisture and absorption
Wood-filled parts can absorb water and coating unevenly. Seal or prime the surface before painting, especially at cut edges and porous areas. Test on an offcut because different fillers and binders react differently.
Apply thin coats
- Light primer layer
- Thin paint layers
- Dry between coats
- Avoid flooding details
Check the final result
Measure critical dimensions after drying, check adhesion and inspect grain. For outdoor or handling applications, confirm the coating’s durability and safety data.
| Step | Risk | Control | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanding | Loss of detail | Grit and pressure | Surface sample |
| Primer | Uneven absorption | Thin layer | Adhesion test |
| Paint | Cracks, runs | Thin coats | Visual check |
| Drying | Dimensional change | Time and temperature | Measurement |
| Sealing | Colour shift | Test area | Colour sample |
Common engineering mistakes
- Painting one heavy coat.
- Skipping the primer.
- Sanding across fine detail.
- Measuring before full drying.
- Using an untested coating outdoors.
Checklist
- Is the surface clean and dry?
- Was a test offcut used?
- Are the coats thin?
- Did the dimensions change?
