Bottom line: flexible filament tangles or jams mainly because of feed-path length, feeder tension, excessive retraction, unstable spool tension and moisture. TPU compresses between the drive gear and the hot end, so a long path amplifies every problem. Check the mechanical path before changing extrusion parameters.

Common causes

CauseEffectFix
Long Bowden pathCompression, lagUse direct drive
Excess feeder pressureFlattened filamentReduce tension
Large retractionGrinding, jamsReduce or disable
High tube frictionUneven feedLow-friction tubing
Unstable spoolTangles, slipUse a free-running holder

Order of checks

  1. Confirm the spool unwinds freely.
  2. Reduce feeder pressure.
  3. Shorten the feed path.
  4. Reduce retraction distance and frequency.
  5. Reduce speed and stabilise flow.

Costly mistakes

  • Using Bowden for soft TPU.
  • Increasing retraction to fix stringing.
  • Over-tightening the feeder.
  • Printing too fast for the feed system.
  • Ignoring moisture.

Buyer / engineer checklist

  • Is the feed path short?
  • Is feeder tension correct?
  • Is retraction small?
  • Does the spool unwind freely?
  • Does speed match the hardness?
