Engineering filament selection starts with measurable requirements: temperature, load, chemical exposure, impact, wear and dimensional tolerance. A material ranking without the application is not a specification.

Define requirements

  • Continuous and peak temperature.
  • Static, cyclic or impact load.
  • Chemical and moisture contact.
  • Service life and tolerance.

Map to material properties

Use heat deflection, creep, toughness, stiffness and chemical data as screening tools. Then check whether the printer can process the candidate.

Validate

  • Print the real orientation.
  • Test the loaded feature.
  • Document acceptance limits.

Common engineering mistakes

  • Choosing by brand or price.
  • Using one strength value.
  • Ignoring processability.
  • Not testing the part.
  • No acceptance criteria.

Buyer checklist

  • Is temperature quantified?
  • Is the load defined?
  • Is chemical contact known?
  • Can the printer process it?
  • Is there a test plan?
