Engineering filament selection starts with measurable requirements: temperature, load, chemical exposure, impact, wear and dimensional tolerance. A material ranking without the application is not a specification.
Define requirements
- Continuous and peak temperature.
- Static, cyclic or impact load.
- Chemical and moisture contact.
- Service life and tolerance.
Map to material properties
Use heat deflection, creep, toughness, stiffness and chemical data as screening tools. Then check whether the printer can process the candidate.
Validate
- Print the real orientation.
- Test the loaded feature.
- Document acceptance limits.
| Requirement | Material property | Test |
|---|---|---|
| Heat | HDT and creep | Loaded heat |
| Load | Stiffness or toughness | Bending |
| Impact | Elongation | Drop |
| Chemical | Compatibility | Exposure |
Common engineering mistakes
- Choosing by brand or price.
- Using one strength value.
- Ignoring processability.
- Not testing the part.
- No acceptance criteria.
Buyer checklist
- Is temperature quantified?
- Is the load defined?
- Is chemical contact known?
- Can the printer process it?
- Is there a test plan?
