Transparent filament is selected by optical result, thickness, temperature, moisture and print profile. PLA, PETG, PC and special clear grades behave differently; a material label alone does not guarantee clarity.
Define the optical target
- Clear or translucent
- Wall thickness
- Haze tolerance
- Colour neutrality
Compare materials
PLA is easy but heat-sensitive, PETG balances clarity and toughness but absorbs moisture, PC is strong and clear but needs high temperature, and PA is tough but difficult to keep clear.
Build the print profile
- Dry the filament
- High end of the temperature window
- Calibrated flow
- Moderate cooling
Test a thick section
Thin samples look clearer than real parts. Print the production thickness and inspect bubbles, layer lines and haze against a light source.
| Material | Clarity | Heat | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | Good | Low | Deformation |
| PETG | Good | Medium | Moisture |
| PC | High | High | Warping |
| PA | Medium | Medium/high | Moisture |
| Special clear grades | High | Varies | Narrow process window |
Common engineering mistakes
- Choosing by name only.
- Testing a thin wall.
- Skipping drying.
- Over-cooling the part.
- Ignoring haze and bubbles.
